Distance from 52-Week Low: formula and how to read it

A stock's 52-week low is the lowest price it reached in the last year. How far the price is above it shows how much the stock has recovered from its worst point.

What is Distance from 52-Week Low?

How far the price sits above its lowest price of the past year. The latest close divided by the lowest price of the last 252 trading days, minus one. Zero means the stock is at its 52-week low and 100% means it has doubled from it.

Stock Meadow groups it under Price trend, and shows it in tables as From 52w low.

Formula and a worked example

Distance from 52-week low = latest close ÷ lowest price of the last 252 trading days − 1

A stock whose lowest price this year was $20 and which closed at $26 is 26 ÷ 20 − 1 = +30% above its low. The numbers are made up for illustration.

How to read it

Zero means the stock is at its 52-week low; 100% means it has doubled from it. It is a filter only: whether a large recovery is good depends on the stock, so there is no better end.

It can be used as a filter and as a column, but not for scoring: it describes a company rather than making it better or worse.

Common pitfalls

  • It says nothing about why the price fell or recovered.
  • The low is the lowest intraday price, so a stock can close above it even on a day it touched a new low.
  • Needs a full year (252 trading days) of prices.

How Stock Meadow handles gaps. Usually blank when the stock has less than a year of price history.

Stock Meadow models that use it

No scoring model uses it. It is a filter and a table column only.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this a filter only?
Being close to the low can mean a bargain or a business in trouble, and being far above can mean a recovery or a stretched price. Stock Meadow lets you filter on it but does not score it.
Can I score stocks on From 52w low?
It can be used as a filter and as a column, but not for scoring: it describes a company rather than making it better or worse.
Why is From 52w low blank for some stocks?
It is usually blank when the stock has less than a year of price history. Stock Meadow leaves the figure blank rather than guessing it.
